As with the rest of men's fashion this year there is so much choice when it comes to stylish on-trend men's coats. There are many different coats available in various durable materials and styles, and here's a brief guide to this year's designs:
Biker - In style since the 1950s and still going strong the biker jacket is a waist length jacket usually, but not always, made of leather. Subtle changes to collars and cuffs have stylised the garment to certain eras and this year sees a mix of the best of them.
Blazer - A single breasted jacket that originally started life as the top half of a suit; today's fashion dictates that this item looks great with a pair of classic denim jeans.
Bomber - Around even longer than the biker jacket and very similar in look, the iconic bomber jacket was originally worn by pilots during the First World War to keep them warm in open and often freezing cockpits!
Gilets - To keep you cosy but without sleeves Gilets are designed to be slipped over existing garments to add significant warmth but also ensure that movement is not restricted. A favourite with sportsmen, Gilets are often padded and lightweight, and used as an alternative to a heavy winter coat.
Harrington - Similar in appearance to biker and bomber jackets, but made of a lightweight material allowing it to be worn as an outer garment or under a heavier coat if it is particularly chilly.
Long line coat - A formal overcoat originally designed to be worn over a suit, long-line coats are usually belted and now look great with smart casual clothes or even jeans and jumpers.
Mac - not an ultra-cool Apple computer, but one of the all-time classic men's coats. For wear in very wet weather or during showers, the Macintosh is most commonly available in grey, black and brown and is expected to be in heavy demand this winter.
Multi pocket - Ideal for those who have plenty to carry and still want to be perfectly on-trend. This year's hottest belted coat takes the 1965 military issue m65 as its inspiration.
Nylon - A hard-wearing and water-resistant synthetic material, nylon has now been crafted into a fashionable hooded lightweight coat that is sure to be a hit this year and next.
Single-breasted - Another classic outer garment, this time three-quarter length and equally good-looking with formal or casual wear. Is longer and usually has more buttons but is similar in style to the Blazer.
Reefer - Big buttons are a feature of this double-breasted three-quarter length coat. Sturdy construction gives both style and warmth to this timeless classic.
Performance - Similar rubberised waterproof material to the Macintosh, the performance coat also has a hood but its lightweight construction makes it ideal for wearing during activity such as cycling or sport.
With a wide range of men's coats available to suit almost any occasion, you will never but short of coats to choose from to match the style you are after. Indeed, the most difficult decision may be deciding which one to wear.
